How to Perform Umrah: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Enter the state of ihram

Before crossing the miqat (the designated boundary), make ghusl if possible, wear the ihram garments (two unstitched white sheets for men; ordinary modest clothing for women), and form the intention (niyyah) for Umrah.

Recite the Talbiyah: 'Labbayk Allahumma labbayk...'. From this point, the restrictions of ihram apply — avoid perfume, cutting hair or nails, and arguing.

2. Arrive at the Masjid al-Haram

Enter with your right foot and the supplication for entering the mosque. When you see the Ka'bah, it is a moment many describe as unforgettable — pause and make du'a, as supplication at first sight of the Ka'bah is said to be accepted.

3. Perform Tawaf

Tawaf is circling the Ka'bah seven times anti-clockwise, beginning and ending at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Men perform raml (a brisk pace) in the first three circuits where possible.

There is no fixed du'a for Tawaf — supplicate in your own words. After completing seven circuits, pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if you can, or anywhere in the mosque.

4. Perform Sa'i between Safa and Marwah

Proceed to Safa and make the intention for Sa'i. Walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times (Safa to Marwah counts as one). Men jog lightly between the clearly marked green lights.

Sa'i commemorates Hajar's search for water for her son Isma'il — a powerful reminder of trust in Allah.

5. Shave or trim the hair

Men shave the head (halq) or trim the hair evenly (taqsir); shaving carries greater reward. Women trim a fingertip's length from their hair.

With this final step, your Umrah is complete and the restrictions of ihram are lifted. May it be accepted.
